Welsh performance animals were very prominent at this year's Royal Welsh. The Ridden Mountain and Moorland classes (qualifiers for the Pony of the Year competition) were amazing. For the Sec. C and Sec. D combined class there were 75 entries. The Sec. A and Sec. B class had 59 entries. The Welsh ridden classes were impressive: 37 in Leading Rein; 31 in First Ridden, Welsh Cob Stallion - 4 to 7 years old - 18; Welsh Cob Stallion 8 & over - 26; Welsh Cob Mare 4-7 - 21; Welsh Cob Mare 8 & over 29; Sec. C any sex, four to seven years old 19; Sec. C 8 & over, any sex - 20; Welsh Cob Gelding 4-7 31; Welsh Cob Gelding 8 & over 36! ..in all, there were two hundred animals entered in the C and D under saddle classes. These classes, as well as the Mtn. and Moorland Welsh classes are open only to purebred animals registered in the stud book.
